BAILEY Family History
Reply Quote
Hi there,

I am looking for other BAILEYs (or descendants) from the greater Wisbech area. I'd love to hear from any descendants, even if you don't think you are connected to my BAILEYs.

I am descended from Bartholomew BAILEY (b. abt 1773 Walpole St Andrew) & Ethelinda THOMPSON (b. abt. 1775 Tilney All Saints). I have only found three children for them & I am suspicious that Ethelinda may have died & Bartholomew remarried, possibly even twice! Their marriage was in 1796 & their children were: twins, John & Gad (b. 1798 Walpole St Andrew) & Catherine (b. 1800 Walpole St Andrew). I am descended from John, who married Mary Ann SNUSHALL (b. abt. 1796 Guyhirne, Cambs). I believe Gad married Margaret or Mary (perhaps both). Catherine married Robert BREEZE & later Richard JEWSON.

John's children included: Maria (b. 1820 West Walton m. Horace OUGHTON), Mary Ann (b. 1831 West Walton m. Benjamin BARRT) & John (b. 1832 West Walton m. Sarah Ann BACON).

Gad's children were: twins, JOhn & Bartholomew (b. 1819 Walpole St Andrew), Abraham (b. 1831), Marriane (b. 1832 Walpole St Peter) & Jane (b. 1839).

Catherine's children were: William BREEZE (b. abt 1824), & the JEWSON children included: Francis (b. 1835), Harriet (b. 1836), Bartholomew (b. 1838), Richard (b. 1840) & Hannah (b. 1843).

I know very little about the descendants of Gad & Catherine, but have more detail on the descendants of John BAILEY & Mary Ann SNUSHALL.

John & Mary Ann were framers & Innkeepers at The Princess Victoria Inn, Walpole St Andrew. John jnr & his wife, Sarah BACON took over The Victoria In on Market Lane. Their children included: William John (b. 1857 Walpole St Andrew m. Ellen of Walpole St Andrew), Elizabeth (b. 1858 Walpole St Andrew), Frank (b. 1860 Walpole St Andrew m. Sophia KITTERINGHAM), John (1863 Walpole St Peter m. Harriet Jane SMITH), Samuel (b. 1868 Walpole St Andrew m. 1. Elizabeth 2. Frances ALDRIDGE), Sarah Ann (b. 1871 m. William BATES), Harry (b. 1874 Walpole St Peter), Bartle (b. 1876 Walpole St Peter) & Alfred (b. 1877 Walpole St Peter).

William John & Ellen's children were: Grace Ellen (b. 1881), Harry (b. 1883) & William John (b. 1886).

Frank & Sophia KITTERINGHAM's children were: Beatrice KITTERINGHAM (b. 1878 Walpole St Andrew m. William BUTLER), Grace Marion (b. 1879 Walpole St Andrew), John Thomas (b. 1880 Sutton Bridge m. Elizabeth Ann WALLER), Walter (b. 1883 Walpole Cross Keys), Laura Minnie Ethel (b. 1883 Walpole St Andrew), Eliza Anne (b. 1885 Parson's Drove m. John WHITE), Frank (b. 1886 Terrington St Clement m. Susan May LOVETT), Arthur (b. 1888 Walpole St Peter m. Esther Ann NEAP), Elizabeth Ann (b. 1889 Walpole St Andrew m. Charles BERNSTEAD), Gertrude Ann (b. 1890 Walpole St Andrew), David (b. 1891 Walpole St Andrew), Grace Ellen (b. 1892 Wisbech area m. George Ernest KELSEY), Christopher (b. 1894 Walpole St Andrew), Priscilla (b. 1895 Walpole St Andrew), Agnes (b. 1895 Walpole St Andrew), Albert (b. 1896 Walpole St Andrew m. Annie HUBBARD), Sophia (b. 1897 Walpole St Andrew m. Thomas BLACK), David (b. 1898 Walpole St Andrew), Annie (b. 1899 Walpole St Andrew) & Mary Emily (b. 1901 Walpole St Andrew m. Harry WOOD).

John & Harriet Jane SMITH's children included: John William (b. 1890 Kings Lynn), Frederick George (b. 1892 Kings Lynn), Henry James (b. 1894 Kings Lynn), Victoria Grace (b. 1897 Kings Lynn) & Ernest Edward (b. 1899 Kings Lynn).

Samuel & Elizabeth's child was Constance (b. 1901 Wisbech St Mary). Samuel & Frances ALDRIDGE's child was Oliver (b. 1906).

Sarah Ann & William BATES' children were: William (b. 1895 West Lynn), Winifred (b. 1897 West Lynn) & Louis (b. 1900 West Lynn).

I'd love to hear from you.

Cheers,
Donna,
Forster, NSW, Australia.

Hi Donna

I was interested in your post - mainly because you mention Horace Oughton as having married into your family. I am up against a brick wall with one Horace Oughton.  My Horace was born in 1801 and died aged 39 in 1840 in Terrington. So it is all in the correct area and it is very possible my Horace was born in Walpole.

I think Horace Oughton is a fairly unusual name and if there are two (and I think there are) then there must be some connection between them.

Can you help at all ??

Kind regards

Sue

Hi,

I can help with your question as my great-grandfather was, I believe, one of the Horace Oughtons you have been tracing.  My cousin has completed lengthy research into the Oughton family tree in the Wisbech area and has discovered the following.  The tree starts with William Oughton (b1740)who married Margaret Clarke ( b1741).  Their third son was called John Oughton ( b1767) who married Susannah Hook (b1770).  They had one son called William (b1795) who married Margaret and produced one child, Horace Oughton (b1800, d1840).  This Horace married Maria Bailey (b1804,d1863), who is,  I presume, the Horace Oughton mentioned in Donna's blog (my cousin's research does go a little further down this line but in less detail).  John Oughton was then married for a second time to Mary Smith (b1770) and they had several children.  One of these was also called John Oughton (b1810, d1883) who married Mary Ann Smith (b1808,d1885).  They had a son whose name appears in the Census as 'Orris' -this was probably the name written by the clerk interpreting the verbally given name 'Horace', since that was the name he was known by!  This Horace Oughton was born in 1844 and married Susan Ingram (b1846) and is the branch I am decended from.

It's complicated by the fact that the family names of Horace, John and William seem to appear in all the generations!  Hope this helps.

Regards,

Oughton descendant

Hi,

Further to my previous post, I have looked again at the family tree and notice that the dates for the Horace Oughton who married Maria Bailey cannot be correct, they appear to be duplicated from a previous 'Horace Oughton' entry in the tree, something that the Excel programme (used in preparing the tree)  does automatically when it recognises an entry.  There is no reason to suggest the names are not correct but I do not have the correct dates.    Whatever the case,  it seems that all the Horace Oughtons in the tree are descendants from William Oughton and Margaret Clarke who married in the 1700s!

Regards

Oughton Descendant

This Oughton Branch is also part of my tree. The John Oughton born 1810, is the brother of my G.G grandfather Thomas born 1812. I think this branch originated in West Acre. As well as many Horaces, there also seem to be many Elliot(t) Oughtons running through the various generations. I am having difficulty finding the birth place & parents of one such Elliot. He married an Ann Coats in King's Lynn St. Nicholas in abt. 1802. There were various children, some baptised in King's Lynn & others baptised in Wisbech. Any help would be much appreciated.  Cee.
