Cambs24 Herts24- CD Reviews

The Mars Volta Octahedron Mercury Records
09:24 - 06 August 2009
AT THE vanguard of contemporary prog-rock for several years, The Mars Volta's seven-minute Since We've Been Wrong is a surprisingly accessible - and restrained - opening salvo.

Not that you'd know it from titles like Cotopaxi, Copernicus and Halo Of Nembutals, but this set from the Grammy-winning Latino Lucifers boasts melodies you don't have to hunt for, yet preserving an unsettling, foreboding atmosphere.

This fifth album exposes the raw core of main man Omar Rodriguez-Lopez's vision, bottling the emotional weight, anger and high drama without much recourse to trademark super-heavy free-form solos and musical freakouts. The pared-down six-strong band pump out gleaming space rock as taut and Ossian-black as you could want.
