The national chain, which currently has a shop in King Street, has submitted a planning application to carry out fitting works and internal alterations in the old department store in Market Place.

Beales, which occupies 6-7 Market Place, closed at the end of the last year.
Holland and Barrett’s application only relates to unit 6, with the Grade II-listed former Beales building – owned by the Co-op – being granted planning permission by Uttlesford District Council last month to be split into two retail units and a mixed retail/food unit on the ground floor, with flats above.

• Fears Beales will remain empty for a long period
The district council is set to rule on the Holland and Barrett application by August 3.

Saffron Walden Town Council’s planning and road traffic committee will discuss the plans at a meeting on Thursday (June 22) night.

Holland and Barrett declined to comment on the application, or on what may happen to its existing store if the firm did move into the Market Place site.
