The redesign of the boundary wall, railings and gates are part of a £400,000 castle restoration project which started last year.

In addition to the gates, new cycle stands, an interpretation board and bins have also been provided. The works were completed by specialist contractor Noble and Taylor, overseen by the architects Purcell.

Cllr Jim Ketteridge, Leader of Uttlesford District Council said: “I am so pleased that this work has been completed in time for the Tour De France.

“It is a real improvement and more in keeping with the historic environment.”

He added: “It is the second phase of the restoration project for the castle.

“Last year, we started works to stabilise the walls and additional work is planned on the semaphore tower this coming July. We also plan to install a number of picnic benches and visitor notice boards over the summer.

“The whole project should be completed in the next two to three years, making the castle an even bigger tourist attraction and asset to the local community.”
