Heavy overnight rain has caused widespread flooding in Saffron Walden.

Essex County Fire & Rescue Service (ECFRS) control centre has received a large number of calls to flooding incidents in the north-west of the county.

The service said that it had attended over 70 flood-related incidents in Saffron Walden, Stansted and Newport.

In Saffron Walden, Thaxted Road, Victoria Avenue, Elizabeth Way and Radwinter Road appeared to be the most affected.

In Radwinter Road, 10 people – eight adults and two children – and two dogs were rescued from flats which had flooded in The Spike. The ECFRS boat was sent to assist with rescuing the residents.

There have been other reports of cars getting stuck around the town – in Elizabeth Way one car was almost completely underwater.

Saffron Walden County High School was closed because of the adverse weather conditions and shortage of staff.

There was also flooding in Clavering. Pri Bamford Tweeted: “Bridge under water in Clavering. To think I ran over this just yesterday morning!!”

Parts of Stansted Mountfitchet have also been hit hard by flooding this morning.

Lower Street is underwater and there have been reports of cars getting stuck in and around the village.

There is also severe flooding in neighbouring Elsenham – including the rail station.

Roads between Takeley, Hatfield Heath, Hatfield Broad Oak and Stansted Airport are also heavily flooded in lower areas.
