Children and parents at Chrishall School spent an afternoon combining eco and technology skills when they took part in an i-scavenger hunt around the village at the weekend.
Around 40 children and their parents set off on a scavenger hunt which used the interactive app Junaio to guide participants to special points around the village. Once there, the app then provided an ecological based question – really testing out the grey matter.
Some of the questions involved collecting items, looking for animal tracks whilst others required the children to find and draw certain plant, floral and fauna.
After a couple of hours of scavenging everyone returned to the school for some crafting – all using recycle materials. This part of the day was called ‘Trash to Treasure’.
On offer was jewellery making using ring can pulls, or glass charms with bottle tops. Other crafts included designing aerodynamic paper airplanes, making creatures out of old rubbish. This was a very good tool for raising awareness of what we throw away and how it can be upcycled to make useful items for the home.
Harriet, in Year 3 said: “It was really good fun. My friends went all round the village looking for the questions using my mummy’s iPhone. We found deer tracks, crops, moss and even a dead frog. I really enjoyed making paper airplanes and seeing how far they could travel’.
Prizes were awarded to those who answered the most question correctly and there was also a Nature Bingo game that the children played whilst completing the scavenger hunt, whereby they crossed off pictures on a bingo sheet (of berry’s, animals, flowers) once they had spotted them.
The day was hailed a huge success by parents and children.
Headteacher Tracey Bratley said: “This event encapsulated the ethos of the school, combining new technology, ecology, sustainability, team work and environmental awareness.
“I was very proud of the enthusiasm shown by the children taking part, whose ages ranged from five to 11.
“It was a great day, adding a new dimension to school events and one which will be repeated.”
