STAFF and volunteers have been recruited to support adults with a disability in a new community gardening project.

Accuro launched the project in Saffron Walden this week – and it will see staff and volunteers providing a range of garden maintenance services for people who are unable to maintain their gardens themselves.

The care services charity says the new development will add a new dimension to its Adult Friendship Scheme that promotes leisure and social opportunities for adults with a disability in Uttlesford.

Chief executive Arthur Steward said: “A number of people have told us of their desire to develop skills that will enable them to move towards paid employment. The result is our Community Gardening Project, which we hope this will be the first of a number of similar ventures in west Essex.”

The project has been endorsed by PM David Cameron and gained commitment at a House of Lords reception. Locally, building suppliers Ridgeons has provided gardening equipment, Stansted Community Fund has given a grant, and Stonebridge Farm in Little Walden is providing the base from which the project will operate.
