The leisure centre in Peaslands Road was broken into at 4.40am on Friday, August 10 and a safe was stolen.

The safe was later found but the contents, including money, were missing.

A spokesman for 1Life, who run Lord Butler Leisure Centre, said: “We can confirm that Lord Butler Leisure Centre was broken into last night or during the early hours of this morning.

“We are working closely and supporting the local police but cannot comment further on this ongoing investigation. We would however urge anyone with any information about this incident to contact 101 and then Essex police.

“The leisure centre remains open but unfortunately our phone lines, email system, internet and booking systems are all down. We are working to get these back online as quickly as possible.

“We thank the community for their support during this time.”

A trolley was also stolen from Homebase in Elizabeth Close, Saffron Walden, sometime in the early hours of August 10.
