They say don’t run before you can walk.
However, a Wethersfield man who has never climbed a mountain before, has chosen not to take this advice on board and plans to climb 15 Welsh peaks in 48 hours, all for charity.
William Ohren, 20, who works at the co-operative in Great Bardfield and has coached sports at local primary schools, will climb Snowdonia, the highest mountain in Wales, and its surrounding peaks, on August 29 to raise money for Children in Need.
William, who went to school in Braintree, will be doing the challenge with four other intrepid adventurers and has been training by walking to work ever morning, from his home in Wethersfield to Great Barfield.
According to the team’s JustGiving page, they are going to cover 30 miles, ascending 4,500m and descending 3,500m.
William, who plays football and tennis, said: “I am nervous and excited. I like to prove people wrong, there’s a lot of doubt surrounding the challenge. I am most looking forward to the views, and just having fun. It is an extreme challenge, but with the group I am going with it is going to be quite a laugh. I have never climbed a mountain before. I spoke to somebody who had done the challenge, and he said as soon as you sit down and relax it kills.”
He added: “People think I’m mad.”
William said: “I loved working with children. I left college when I was 16 and went straight into volunteering at Wethersfield Primary School. Everybody deserves to have a childhood. The charity wants to give all children a fair chance in life.”
Money raised from a music night organised by William will go towards the group’s final fundraising total. The free event was held at Wethersfield Club on July 7, with local band Another Late Sunday, singers Melaine Reeve and Calum McFee, amongst others, performing. Food and drink was available to buy and Great Bardfield butcher D.K Smith donated 50 burgers and 50 sausages.
Embarking on the mammoth challenge with William is Luke Mead, 28, Shaun Mead 24, Santino Bomando, 28 and Laura Gibbs, 38.
