There are an estimated 1,000 young people who are carers in Uttlesford. Now a free new support network with some “fantastic perks” is being rolled out across the district to help lighten the load.

Crossroads East Anglia – which provides a range of services and support for carers – is in the process of setting up the young adult carer project to cover Uttlesford.

It is aimed at young adults who are between 16 and 25 and looking after a member of their household for any reason, for any amount of hours.

Young adult carers project worker Julia Gray said: “Often they do not even consider themselves to be a carer, it is simply part of their everyday lives and something that they have always done.

“We know the transition between a child and adult carer can be tricky, with a wide range of problems such as struggling with school and college work, finding employment or training. We can help them meet up with other people who are in the same situation.”

Young adults can also took advantage of learning to drive with RED driving school at a reduced price or deals at local leisure centres, as well as other social outlets and supplemented transport facilities. Crossroads also provides one-to-one counselling or just someone to listen to them.

There is no need to have an official assessment to take up the scheme. Young carers interested in finding out more can call 01799 513496, email julia.gray@crossroadseastanglia.org.uk or pop in to the Crossroads Care offices at Bakehouse Court on the High Street, Saffron Walden.
