Specialist police officers are trying to identify a man in connection with a nighthawking incident in Great Chesterford.

It is believed someone went onto a protected Roman site in Newmarket Road in the village with a metal detector, and removed items belonging to Historic England.

The alleged incident happened on September 29.

Pc Andy Long, wildlife and heritage officer for Essex Police, shared a photo on social media of a man he would like to speak to in connection with the incident.

Investigations are ongoing.

Great Chesterford is home to a Roman fort, thought to have been used by auxiliary army units, and is one of only four in Essex. Great Chesterford is therefore thought to be the only walled Roman town in Essex, apart from Colchester.

There are also Roman cemeteries, which were later used by the Anglo-Saxons, as part of the site, which is a protected ancient monument.

Nighthawking is a term used for the theft of archaeological artefacts from protected sites under cover of darkness.

If you have any information about this incident please contact Essex Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
