Police arrest two men after village shop ram-raid

Two men have been arrested after a village store was ram-raided in the early hours of this morning (Monday).

A Jaguar Sovereign was driven into Debden Village Shop at about 2am.

The vehicle had been stolen from Ozier Court, Saffron Walden and was later found on fire in fields backing on to Usterdale Road and Buckenhoe Road.

Police believe the suspects had been trying to break into the shop’s Post Office but were unsuccessful. It is unclear at this stage whether anything was stolen from the shop.

Officers said there had been an attempt to steal a Fiat Punto, also in Ozier Court, prior to the theft of the Jaguar.

• A 21-year-old man from Saffron Walden and a 24-year-old man from Stansted Mountfitchet were arrested on suspicion of burglary and theft of a motor vehicle.

The pair have been bailed until August 28 pending further police enquiries.

A metal storage unit, in Pond Lane, Hatfield Heath, was broken into after the timber door was jemmied. Nothing was taken in the incident which took place between 3pm on January 5 and 9am on January 7. A steel storage unit was also broken into at the same location between January 6 and January 7, with an angle grinder being used to get in. Once again, nothing was stolen.
