Police received a call at 12.50am this morning (September 10), with reports that a burglary was taking place.

Officers quickly arrived on scene and a Land Rover Discovery, which had been seen in convoy with an Audi TT, was found nearby with the shop’s ATM machine.

The Audi has not been found.

The store has a large hole in the front door and there is significant damage inside, although no structural damage.

District Commander Chief Inspector Janette Rawlingson said: “This kind of incident has a big impact on communities and we’d like to thank local people for their co-operation as enquiries have been taking place today.

“A number of people have called in to share information about this incident. If you have anything further which you think may help the officers working on the investigation, do not hesitate to contact us.”

A spokesman for the Co-op said: “There was an incident at our Church Road, Stansted Mountfitchet, store in the early hours of this morning where there was an unsuccessful attack on the community’s ATM.

“We appeal for anyone with information to come forward to police, who are investigating.

“The store is expected to re-open later today.”
