Army bomb disposal experts have been called in after a suspected bomb was discovered in the garden of the village’s police station.

Police have also cordoned off roads nearby, causing disruption to motorists.

Reports suggest the B1381 Cambridge Road has been closed and vehicles travelling in both directions have been diverted away from the incident.

It has led to long delays for motorists travelling through the village. Traffic is currently at a standstill on Chapel Hill, Lower Street and High Lane, where the diversion is in place.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “Officers discovered an unexploded device to the rear of Stansted Mountfitchet Police Station shortly after 12.30pm today (Monday).

“An Army bomb disposal unit advised officers to implement a 100m cordon around the station which was carried out. Officers also closed nearby roads.”

Bomb disposal experts were still at the scene as of 4pm today.
