Members of a Saffron Walden motorcycle club joined a convoy of more than 350 bikers at the weekend to deliver presents to children at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

A group of 33 members from Walden Bikers met at Saffron Walden Common on Sunday (December 11) to ride to Halton, Cambridgeshire, which was the official meeting point for the annual Cambridge Bikers Christmas Toy Run.

After a briefing by biker Pete Vasey, who organised the event, a total of 377 bikes set off from Halton at 10am, escorted by police riders to head for the hospital along the A603 through Harston and into Cambridge.

Motorbikes of all sizes, some with sidecars, as well as a contingent of scooters made up the convoy, with spectators coming out of their homes to cheer the bikers on their way.

Staff from the children’s ward at Addenbrooke’s brought some of the patients to see the arrival of the convoy, with dolls, books, games, soft toys and stocking fillers donated.

A special presentation of a golden Santa hat was made to Sgt Gareth Williams, who has supported the run since it was revived in 2013, as it was to be his last toy run before beginning a new role in the police.
