A burger van was targeted in an arson attack on Monday night in Shire Hill.

Two fire crews from Saffron Walden were called after they were alerted to a food van on fire at 8.46pm. Firefighters arrived to find the van completely alight and used breathing apparatus and two hosereel jets to put out the flames.

They used a thermal image camera to identify hot spots and worked to extinguish the fire. It was put out by 9.20pm and the incident was then handed over to the police.

Eyewitness, Christopher Kidman, 34, a photographer from Saffron Walden, said: “The van was at the top of Shire Hill industrial estate near Plumb Center. It was well alight when the crews arrived but they quickly knocked the fire down and stopped it from spreading any further.”

The cause of the fire is being investigated and treated as deliberate.
