The half marathon in Haverhill saw 13 Striders line up among the 173 runners, and Hewlett was victorious in the male over 60 category. His time of 1hr 55mins secured him the prize, to add to his Strider of the Year award which he picked up in February after a vote among club members.

It is the latest achievement for Hewlett, who only started running with the club after completing its beginners course, just three years ago.

Fiona Halls was also in medal-winning form at Haverhill, coming in as the second female in 1hr 34mins for 13th overall.

Striders Stephane Toussenel, Matt Billis and Toby Lumsden all finished in the top 10 – in 7th, 8th and 10th respectively and in times between 1hr 31mins and 1hr 33mins.

Jon Beard picked up a personal best at the race. The other Striders to complete the tough, hilly 13.1 mile course were Will Leonard, James Norman, Andrew Flind, Ian Rogers, Steve Inkley, Lucy Stebbings and Simon Chambers. All the Striders finished in the top half.

Neil Halls was the sole Saffron Strider to run the 10K version of the Haverhill race, finishing in 49mins 36secs for 26th out of 180 runners.

Meanwhile two club members took on the Halstead and Essex Marathon, with Carol White picking up two prizes. She was the first female over 50 to finish, in a fast 3hrs 38mins, for 136th out of 533 runners overall. This also earned her the Essex County gold medal in the female over 45 category. Chris Bushell ran an excellent race too, completing the 26.2 mile undulating course in 4hrs 3mins for 286th position.
