It was an exciting weekend of action for the Saffron Striders as club members smashed personal bests at two regional races.
The Perkins Great Eastern Run in Peterborough drew a sizeable contingent from Saffron Walden’s running club, with 13 members braving appallingly wet conditions to tackle the 13.1-mile course.
Chris Miller finished in an incredible 1hr 21mins 29secs, making him 101st in field of more than 3,800 runners. Andy Bryant was among four Striders who recorded a new half marathon personal best at Peterborough – taking five minutes off his previous best time set six years ago and finishing in a blistering 1hr 26mins 11secs for 190th place.
Third home for the club was chairman Nigel Coates in 1hr 26mins 46secs, while Matt Billis also recorded a sub 90-minute finish in 1hr 28mins 25secs.
Toby Lumsden’s 1hr 30mins 25secs put him well inside the top 10 per cent of finishers while Andrew Flind celebrated a new personal best of 1hr 30mins 47secs.
Tim McMahon also ran his fastest ever half marathon on Sunday, finishing in 1hr 36mins 57secs.
Keith Savill and Joe Hall were the next Striders home, in 1hr 39mins 18secs and 1hr 41mins 33secs respectively, while Iain Rogers recorded a time of 1hr 46mins 41secs.
James Hewlett, recipient of the latest Strider of the Month award, continued his recent superb form by taking more than three minutes off his half marathon personal best with a finishing time of 1hr 48mins 51secs.
Arthur Oliva and Alistair Cooke secured finishing positions inside the top half of runners and well under the two hour mark, with times of 1hr 52mins 36secs and 1hr 54mins 39secs. Running her first ever half marathon, Tanya Bartram was delighted to finish in 2hrs 13mins 28secs.
Meanwhile at the Tiptree 10, Fiona Halls destroyed the competition to finish as the third female in 1hr 8mins 8secs and Neil Halls set a new 10 mile personal best in 1hr 22mins. Their overall finishing places were 36th and 122nd respectively out of 289 runners.
