The 18-year-old Saffron Walden racer set a fastest time of 1:35.012 for his ma-con Motorsport team - just 0.277 seconds slower than leader Felix Rosenqvist. Carlos Sainz was second in his Carlin in a time of 1:34.960 with Raffaele Marciello’s 1:34.960 good enough for third place.

Title favourite Daniel Juncadella failed to make it into the top five, finishing sixth behind Dunmow’s Alex Lynn.

Juncadella fiercest rival Pascal Wehrlein was 13th while William Buller, who also still has title chances, ended up seventh. Austrian Lucas Auer, the nephew of ex-Formula 1 driver Gerhard Berger was the second-best guest driver, only two places behind Buller.

In total, 15 drivers were within only 0.8 seconds.
