Without three of their top five batsmen, Saffron Walden slipped to a six-wicket loss at Vauxhall Mallards on Saturday.

The heroes of last week’s 24-run third wicket partnership, Jason Gallian and Charlie Knightley, were both missing, as was captain Giles Ecclestone, leaving a youthful Walden to manoeuvre the bottom of the table clash.

But without the trio, who have scored nearly 1,000 runs this season, Walden’s innings never got going after they were put into bat.

They lost Alex Morley (0) in the fourth over and then Ray Mordini (13) and Andrew Gale (16) were dismissed in the same over to leave Saffron Walden reeling.

Number four Lloyd Paternott’s 55 steered Walden away from a potential catastrophe when they were 37-3, but when he was trapped LBW, with the score on 115, by Paul Bradshaw, who took four wickets, the innings quickly unravelled.

Jack Sneath had added 21 from his fifth spot in the order but the lower middle and tail orders found no success against the Bradshaw led attack and Walden were bowled out for a 133.

Walden’s bowlers gave the side a glimmer of hope, taking the first wicket with the penultimate ball of the third over. Andrew Winton followed up by having Matt Platter (6) caught by Andrew Gales to reduce Mallards to 23-2 in the seventh over.

In his very next over he had Geeth Alwis (6) caught, this time by Paternott, as Mallards struggled to 30-3.

That was where Walden’s success ended. Opener David Turner was still going strongly and put 27 on the board in a 51-run partnership with Warren Green, who was stumped by Mordini off Gale.

Turner (61*) was joined by Dylan Blignaut (21*) and the pair saw Vauxhall Mallards to victory without further alarm.
