Saffron Walden lost three wickets in the first over to set the tone for a dreadful display in an eight-wicket loss to Swardeston.

In one of their worst batting performances of the season, Walden were bowled out for a miserable 81. Then, the hosts took less than and hour to surpass the total to consolidate their position at the top of the East Anglian Premier Division table.

Giles Ecclestone elected to bat first and it backfired spectacularly. Jack Sneath was bowled with the first ball, Charlie Knightley trapped LBW by the second and Lloyd Paternott caught with the final delivery of the over.

At three wickets down and with one run on the board, matters went from bad to worse as Ecclestone was caught in the second over without scoring before Chris Wisbey edged behind into sixth.

The collapse continued as Walden slumped from 9-5 to 19-6 as Joe Barrs fended off 12 balls before being caught for one. Jason Gallian followed him to the pavilion in the next over having scored 11.

Some late hitting from Thomas Philp (14) and Andrew Winton (27*) spared Walden complete embarrassment but their total of 81 was never going to trouble Swardeston.

And so it proved as opener Peter Lambert scored 45 before he was the second wicket to fall, caught by Paternott off Barrs, with the score on 71. All that was left was for Stephen Gray (18*) and Robert O’Donnell (9*) to score the 10 runs needed to pick up a comfortable eight-wicket win.
