Knightley, a former Oxfordshire batsman, and ex-England international Gallian may have a combined age of 85 but they showed they can still produce the goods when it counts. They put 246 runs in the board in a third-wicket partnership that all but won the game for Walden before Burwell had even come out to bat.

Alex Morley (36) and Lloyd Paternott (29) opened the batting and gave Walden a solid foundation but no one, especially Burwell’s bowlers, could have forseen what was to come.

Gallian joined Knightley in the middle at 65-2 with both batsmen on zero and what happened next will long be remembered at the Anglo American Playing Fields.

Knightley found the rope 24 times and launched two balls over it as he passed a half-century, then 100 and even 150 on his way to an unbeaten 165.

At the other end, Gallian scored over 70 for the second game running, this time ending five runs short of last week’s 78.

It was just reward for the duo who played superbly to salvage a draw against Copdock and Old Ipswichian a week earlier after the opponents’ openers put on over 200 runs.

Saturday’s result was never in doubt, though. Having seen Knightley and Gallian to a total of 311-2, Burwell never settled and lost wickets in the second and third overs before losing two in the fourth.

Even a century from Paul Summerskill could do nothing to stop the inevitable as Andrew Gale (4-37) took the last three wickets to wrap up an 87-run victory.
