Saffron Walden need to hit the ground running and pick up three points in their opening game of the season, according to assistant manager Jason Maher.

The Bloods kick-off their 2014/15 Thurlow Nunn Division One campaign this Saturday at home to Debenham LC and will be looking to avoid the mistakes that marred the start last year.

Walden picked up just 11 points from the first 11 games and were constantly playing catch-up. That cannot happen again, says Maher.

“Eleven points from the first 11 games is never productive if you want to go up,” he said.

“We need to start sharp because we have two games a week for the first month. The promotion push could be over if we’re playing catch-up like we were last season.

“It’s really important that we get confidence up early, keep a few clean sheets and make ourselves hard to beat. If we can do that then we should be in the [promotion race] by the end of the season.”

They don’t need to look too far to find inspiration for a strong run of games having won seven of their last nine games at the back end of last year.

And though it ended in disappointment, they came fifth and missed the play-offs, that set-back has the squad eager improve on what was an otherwise impressive season.

“There is a hunger in the squad,” said Maher.

“No one expected us to be [in the top five] after a bad start. But it was also frustrating because on paper the squad was strong enough and capable enough to go up but we lost games we should have won.”

He added: “There hasn’t been a massive overhaul of the side. We’ve added a few new faces to freshen things up but we believe in the players we have and what they can do.

“We have the players but need to hit the ground running and find consistency early on.”

Saturday’s game kicks off at 3pm at Catons Lane.
