Colin Wallington and Nicky Smith are looking to bolster their squad.

A WORRYING injury list and a demanding fixture schedule has Saffron Walden Town bosses on the look-out for new talent.

Bloods’ co-management team of Colin Wallington and Nicky Smith are keen to bolster the squad amid injuries to key players, and suspensions.

Wallington stressed that “local” players will get the chance to prove themselves before he looks elsewhere.

“Nicky and I are keen for it to be local boys who we bring in,” he told the Reporter.

“Last weekend we had 16 players from Saffron Walden in the first team and the reserves. You won’t find that anywhere else.”

However, the duo have revealed they are looking further afield with one potential signing - Long Melford’s Dan Cann.

A former Billericay Town FC player, Cann - a renowned dead ball specialist - signed for Melford in January 2011 and has been the top scorer at Stoneylands Stadium for the last two seasons.

“We just need more options in the squad and he is someone we have been looking at,” explained Wallington.

“We have a considerable number of injuries with Stuart Wardley, Jake Noble and Dan Phelan all carrying knocks – the hardest working people at training are our physios.”

With Lee Owen starting a three-game suspension this week and James Abbott also set to miss games following his red card against Haverhill Rovers in Saturday’s FA Vase tie, the Bloods midfield in particular is looking threadbare - so the return of Louis Harper and Steve Goode from injury could not be timelier.

Walden have “two big games in four days” approaching – they face Braintree Reserves at home on Saturday, before welcoming rivals Newmarket Town to Catons Lane on Tuesday (September 25).
