Abacus Athletic completed the club’s first-ever cup winning double with a 2-0 victory over Hatfield Heath in the final of the Charity Salver ... and now they’re on for the treble.

They started lively and had the better of the possession but couldn’t carve open an opportunity. Heath came close before the break, from a set piece, which keeper Marc Salmon saved.

Abacus came out for the second half all guns blazing. Sean Stock sent in a looping cross and Steve Leys out-jumped his marker only to see his header clip the crossbar.

Leys then became provider for JJ Anderson, flicking on a header for the winger to run onto for a one-on-one, but he couldn’t beat the keeper.

Charlie Norris then struck the ball sweetly but straight at the goalkeeper, before his corner was headed against the crossbar by Foster.

Frustration could have crept in for the Abacus players, but the breakthrough finally came Norris headed Anderson’s free kick past the outstretched arms of the Heath keeper.

Hatfield were forced to attack and came close with an effort that hit the post.

But Abacus made the game safe with a second, after a quick break-away, when Anderson controlled Norris’s cross and rifled home.

Abacus, which formed 18 years ago, could now go on to win the league if they secure the point they need at home to Manuden United Reserves, on Sunday.
