An unfortunate own goal by debutant Ben Cross two minutes into added time at the end off the match denied Saffron Walden a hard earned victory against promotion rivals Ipswich Wanderers at Catons Lane last night (Tuesday).

A powerful clearance from Stuart Wardley struck the unfortunate Cross, who had an impressive debut, and rebounded back agonisingly into the Walden goal as the Thurlow Nunn League Division 1 match ended 1-1.

Following an impressive first half display by the Bloods, Darren Bicknell put Walden ahead from close range in the 30th minute after Craig Calver’s shot had been blocked in the goalmouth.

Saffron Walden could easily have been further ahead at the interval, as the forward line looked dangerous throughout the first 45 minutes.

Ipswich made two changes at the interval and the second half was competitive, and more even, with both defences on top, but the Bloods battled away tirelessly to preserve their lead, and after succeeding for just over the hour, they looked destined to gain a vital victory.

A needless foul in the centre circle two minutes into injury time, allowed Ipswich Wanderers the chance to pump the ball into the Walden penalty area, and although Wardley looked to have cleared the ball successfully, fate dealt the home team a cruel blow, and a sixth home league draw of the season.

The Bloods have gained five more points on their travels this season than at home, and need another maximum three points away to Stowmarket Town on Saturday to extend their unbeaten run to 10 games, and keep up the pressure on the leading teams.

WALDEN: Paul Wood, Spike Bell, Ben Cross, Matt Snelling (James Crane – 92 mins), Chris Reid (Cameron Watson – 74 mins.), Stuart Wardley, Joe Murphy, Stuart Hoskin, Craig Calver, Darren Bicknell, Louis Harper.
