Saffron Walden produced an encouraging performance in their first pre-season friendly of the 2014/15 campaign, as they drew 2-2 away to Biggleswade United.

Goals from Graham Turner and Craig Calver secured the result, as The Bloods used 17 different players during the 90 minutes.

Fielding a strong eleven, the away side played their best football in the opening half an hour.

They almost got off to the worst possible start though when Walden goalkeeper Floyd Croll tripped Ray Carbon inside the penalty area to leave the referee with little choice but to award the penalty.

The ‘keeper redeemed himself though, saving low down from Carbon to keep the game goalless.

Calver then had a shot deflected over the bar and Graham Turner a goal disallowed as Walden began to dominate.

They got their reward soon after as Calver found Graham Turner, who beat the offside trap before finishing calmly from 12 yards out.

The visitors continued to impress going forward, but were pegged back against the run of play when Carbon showed his class by hooking the ball past Croll after being put clean through.

Following the half-time interval, the game began to level out as a string of substitutes were introduced, and it was Biggleswade who took advantage as they took the lead in the 72nd minute, courtesy of Tre Grant.

The away side were only behind for two minutes though, as Turner was brought down in the penalty area allowing Calver to convert the spot-kick.

The penalty proved to be the final significant action of the match, as both teams seemed happy to settle for what they had.

Walden will host Chelmsford City on Thursday evening in a ‘pay what you want’ match for fans.
