SAFFRON Walden were below par as they suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat at AFC Sudbury Reserves on Wednesday night (September 4).
The hosts proved much the stronger and deserved their win.
They were 1-0 up in the 10th minute when Lee Ilfield latched on to a through ball from Carl Daw and finished past debutant keeper Floyd Croll.
Walden had two chances to equalise, with Joe Murphy, Jamie Solkom and Charlie Davies going close.
The second half was much more one way traffic for Sudbury, especially when Walden skipper Alec Riches limped off with an injury.
In the 68th minute, Daw crossed to Andy Fisher who headed the ball in to give the Yellows a two-goal advantage and two minutes later the game was safe when substitute Blake Kicksshot found its way past Croll.
Man-of-the-match Ryan Swallow added a fourth with a well-taken finish.
Graeme Turner scored a late consolation for Walden. with a close range effort following a mistake from Sudbury keeper Luke Avenell, but it was too little too late.
Walden return to action at home to Stowmarket Town tomorrow (Saturday), 3pm kick off.
