Saffron Walden Golf Club scratch team reached top spot in the CAGU Division 1 after beating Girton 5-1 at the Windmill club.
Richard Southall and Cam Brown played blistering golf to beat Cooke and Lee 9-up. They were always one in front of the Girton pairing, to push through the convincing win. It is now four out of four for the Walden boys who look in irresistible form.
Mark Reeve and Olly Tuck delivered another masterclass performance in beating Taite and Cowie 6-up. They raced through 17 holes in four under par, only to bogey the last two for a 6-up win.
In the third pair, Tom Duggan and James Goodfellow played some impressive golf against Giblett and Zac Cooke, knocking in fivebirdies over the first 12 holes to be 3-up. Several errors off the tee and on the green then proved costly as the pair found themselves all square on 17. A regulation par down the last meant the game finished all square but, having looked comfortable for another win a few holes earlier, it felt like a point lost rather than gained for Walden.
Nevertheless, at the mid-season break, Walden are top of the table on 18 points, three ahead of second-placed Brampton Park.
Scratch captain Graham Goodman said: “It is a great position to be in at the break having been promoted last year. The momentum is being carried through and we have a belief in ourselves.
“The next fixture is at home to Newmarket and the remaining three are away, so we will see how good we are. It is going to be exciting.”
