SAFFRON Walden Golf Club scratch team started their CAGU Division 1 scratch league campaign with a great victory away from home over Gog Magog, 4-2.
The match was played over the long Wandlebury course which favoured the Gog Magog team - but this did not stop the Walden boys.
Out first for Walden was the in form pairing of Tom Duggan and Olly Tuck. They got off to a perfect start gaining a 3-up lead early on, but narrowly lost 1-down through a resurgence of the Gog’s pairing.
Second out for Walden was the pairing of Mike Orris and Danie van der Westhuizen. Westhuizen’s power coupled with Orris’s accuracy proved a formidable opposition for the Gog’s pairing of Hughes and Williams. The Walden pairing won 4-up.
The deciding match featured Walden captain Richard Southall and Cameron Brown against CAGU B captain James Stammers and Rob Cramsie.
The Walden boys got off to a great start and a level par front nine saw them go 4-up. Four birdies in five holes on the back nine saw them cruise to a 6 & 5 victory and a seven holes up total for 18 holes.
Southall said: “It was a great way to start the season with a win considering Gog Magog is a tough away fixture.”
