It’s “job half-done” for Saffron Walden as the team’s promotion charge received a significant boost.

Skipper Matt Wells had earmarked six points from two games against their nearest rivals in consecutive weeks.

The first of those fell on Saturday against table-toppers Old Southendians – and they delivered with an accomplished performance, four-goal haul and a clean sheet.

Wells said: “It was a good result and great to come away with three points. It’s a good job half-done.

“If we can win on Saturday we’ll be eight points clear with four games to go.

“One win then would mean we’ve earned the right to relax and really enjoy the final few games.”

Walden were worthy of the points in Southend.

In terrible weather conditions, neither side played fluent hockey in the first half, although Walden managed to go in 2-0 up thanks to goals from Ant Colclough and David Boyd.

The weather brightened after the interval, which led to an improvement in Walden. Boyd added his second and Ben Wells also hit the target.

Wells, though, praised the defence and keeper Tom Bonham who, he said, enjoyed his best performance of the season.

So they move on to Havering this weekend, although it will not be an easy encounter – Havering beat Walden 4-1 in the reverse fixture in November.
