HOME fans finally had something to cheer as Walden recorded only their second win of the season as they beat Upminster 4-1.

The opening stages were scrappy, neither side retaining possession well as both teams looked to dominate.

Walden settled the quicker and patiently played the ball from left to right in search of openings in the Upminster defence.

The breakthrough came as Davison’s excellent control of a lifted pass and one-two with Mayle saw her evade defenders, and she rounded the keeper with ease to finish from close range.

Upminster’s skilful offensive players were prevented from penetrating the D by some well timed tackles from Cox and Westerhuis.

Despite looking secure in defence Walden were pleased to go into the break with a two-goal cushion after Mayle, for the second game in succession, converted a penalty stroke.

Knowing the next goal could be crucial and not wanting to give Upminster a foothold in the game, Walden started the second period in determined fashion.

Stringing together a mixture of measured passes and faster one touch attacking play further opportunities were created.

The third goal was a superb team effort, building from the back before Burlinson swiftly moved the ball through midfield to the front line. The ball was passed square from the left and Wyatt’s stick skills afforded her plenty of time to pick her spot.

Full of confidence, Walden continued to play fluent hockey and tireless running from Deary and Wahlich ensured the home side’s tempo was maintained.

Langridge slotted home Walden’s deserved fourth and only the Upminster keeper kept them from adding to their tally.

Despite an excellent goal line clearance from Burlinson, Walden were unable to prevent Upminster getting their consolation goal as they scored in the final seconds.

Walden remain in the relegation zone, despite the three points, and they remain nine from safety.
