Saffron Walden moved to within one win of promotion after a 10-0 rout of Harpenden on Saturday.
Despite not being at their best in the first half – although they still led 5-0 at the break – Walden were well worthy of the victory.
Captain Matt Wells and David Boyd both scored hat-tricks, Tom Kemp hit two, and Ant Colclough and Josh Charge also registered to cap an impressive scoreline.
With three fixtures to complete this season, it means that one victory will seal Walden’s passage to the premier division, while two wins will guarantee them the title.
Wells said: “It’s a good result and another step forward to promotion. We need to make sure we complete the job now.”
“In the first half we never actually played anywhere near the standard we can. The goals were from fine individual skills rather than team play, Some of the younger players perhaps thought it was a bit easy.
“But we let them know at half time to stick at what they’re good at and if they did that we’d win the game by a comfortable scoreline. I was much happier with the second half performance and we managed to build up a big score.
“Harpenden have had some good results recently and they’re not a bad side. We just really turned it on in the second half and played well.”
Walden host Ely on Saturday, 1.30pm start.
