Rampant Saffron Walden remain on target for promotion as they reached the half-point of the season in style.

Despite being bottom of the table, Ely had certainly not been turned over by any team prior to Saturday’s mauling on the Newport Free Grammar School astroturf. Walden skipper Matt Wells rattled in four and his brother Ben helped himself to a hat-trick, while Tom Greig, David Boyd and an own goal completed the scoring.

Walden led only 3-0 at the break, but once they got on top in the second half it was one-way traffic and the floodgates opened.

It was a display that Wells described as “very encouraging”, notably for the level of maturity that his team showed.

“It was a professional, team performance,” he said. “Last season we might have won this 5-2 or 6-2, or some score like that. But we’re showing more maturity.

“Ely have lost every game but they hadn’t been trounced. They certainly came to park the bus and weren’t looking to attack. It made things difficult for us but we ground them out. We played the game for 70 minutes.”

Earlier in the season Wells had set a target of 100 goals for the season for his team, and this result would have done that challenge no harm. The result keeps them in second place in the table after 12 games and sit in amongst the three teams – behind Old Southenian and in front of Havering – who are pulling away at the summit.

“It’s been a good first half of the season and we’ve scored 51 goals. If we keep that kind of level up in the second half, we should be there or there-abouts for promotion,” he said.

“There are three teams pulling away and we need to make sure we stay in that top two.”

Walden’s next game is on December 14 at home to West Herts 2, before the Christmas break.
