SAFFRON Walden played their best hockey of the season as they crushed Sudbury on Saturday.

Ben Wells hit four of the goals as Walden kept alive their slim hopes of promotion. Skipper Andy Boyd hit a brace, as did Tom Kemp, with Matt Wells, Chris Boyd and David Boyd all getting on the scoresheet.

Andy Boyd was pleased with the performance.

“Eleven goals was a bit more than we hoped for but we were very good, probably the best we’ve played this season,” he said.

The result will do no harm to Walden’s goals-for column and it was also a timely confidence booster for the young team going into the run-in. They remain 10 points off second place – two go up – with only five games remaining, three against fellow challengers.

“We can only keep winning our games and hope others do us a favour. We can only do what we have to do.

“Last season we were in the chasing pack until quite late. In a way the pressure is off,” said Boyd.

Walden travel to third-place Ford on Saturday for a 1.30pm start.
