Local cricket round up

SAWSTON: Sawston maintained their impressive start to the season with a comfortable win over league leaders Waresley by six wickets in the Tucker Gardner Premier League.

The home side won the toss and decided to bat first, and things were looking good as they progressed to 34 without loss before they lost a couple of quick wickets. It was the introduction of Aaron Pledger (6-28) that turned the game on its head as the hosts slipped to 86-6. Sawston looked in control as the score lurched to 118-8, before the tail led by Australian Blair Tickner (43) got Waresley to 155.

This looked challenging as Sawston lost Powell, Blanchard and Langen before the total had reached double figures, all victims to Tickner (4-48). However, a stand of 137 between opener Luke Spears (79) and Skipper Adam Ellis (64no) took Sawston to the brink of victory. The loss of Spears could not halt Sawston’s progress as they got home for a 25-point win with eight overs to spare.

The impressive early season form from Sawston’s young side earned call ups to Cambridgeshire’s Development Squad (under-25) for Sam Powell, Spears, Pledger and Ellis.

• Sawston 2nd XI game against Saffron Walden III turned out to be a run fest as the home side racked up an impressive 308 from 40 overs. Opener Guy Masterson (62) was among the runs with his second half century of the season, and he now averages close to 150. There was also useful runs from Martin Heginbotham (34) and teenager Matt Day (32) before skipper Jason Metson added a rapid 75. Teenagers Salar Baig and Ollie Borley both made useful contributions to boost the total.

Walden’s opener made a very useful 80 but the visitors were always behind the scoring rate before they closed on a creditable 219 for 6, with Baig and Harvey picking up a couple of wickets.

LINTON: Linton cruised to victory at home against Abington on Saturday. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat. Connor Campbell taking three wickets and a couple of brilliant diving catches by Andy Polley and Tom Macer were the highlights, restricting Abington to 189-8 off their 40 overs.

Steve Livermore (85), Mick Wilson (54no) and A Joseph (30 not out off 8 balls) helped Linton to 191-1 and gave them their second win in front of a their new pavilion.

With a number of players returning to the side from University, Linton are looking in good shape for the rest of the season.

They are away at Cambourne on Saturday.

GREAT CHESTERFORD: Six local cricket teams will compete in a round robin tournament.

Chesterfords Cricket Club’s 6-a-side Bash is on Sunday (May 25) starting at 10.30am at the rec. There will be a bar and barbecue and friends and family are welcome.
