Archant

Newport Elms Croquet Club had a home win over Enfield West after a remarkable league encounter.

Enfield had finished as runners-up last season, but the four Newport payers won the two doubles games comfortably.

Then, out of the 16 singles games, no fewer than nine had to go to a deciding 13th hoops, with Newport winning five.

The other singles games saw Newport win eight times and claim victory by a final margin og 13-5.

But the most unusual aspect to the match was the high number of hoops played – 138 in all.

Despite Enfield experiencing a lot of frustration this match was played in a friendly spirit and the four successful Newport players were Adrian Seabrook, Roger Turner, Peter Cowper and John Richardson.
