NEWPORT Free Grammar School eventually came out on top in what proved to be a very tight U14 district competition.
Goals were at a premium throughout with the first four matches all ending scoreless. In the game against Saffron Walden, Newport had slightly the better of the play but could not score the vital goal.
Their next match against Friends’ School saw dogged defence by the opposition and a number of chances going just wide.
With Saffron Walden then beating Friends by a single goal, Newport needed to gain a better result against Helena Romanes to win the tournament on goal difference. Harriet Barker made the first breakthrough with a fine strike from the top of the circle. Paris Sterling-Hendricks then scored before Lucy Dan completed a three-goal victory.
