Ben Lockyer scores a try for Saffron Walden against Lowestoft and Yarmouth.

WALDEN suffered a heart breaking loss in their season opener but coach Andy Price thinks his team is positioned for a strong season.

A late try and a blocked last second drop goal attempt handed victory to Lowestoft in a back-and-fourth game that featured two potent offences but little defence from either side.

It looked like it would be a long day for Price when Lowestoft’s ex-Tongan international Dave Tiueti scored within 10 minutes but Ben Lockyer replied with two tries to take the lead. It was short lived though as Tiueti notched his second score before the teams traded penalty kicks.

With half time approaching Walden showed off their improved set plays by winning the scrum and releasing Ollie Lockyer, who went over in the corner to take a 20-17 lead into the break.

The second half was another try-fest as the teams fought for the advantage. Brad Sutherland and Tyler Beales added tries for Lowestoft but Tom Hughes replied with two scores of his own to keep the sides within touching distance.

Sutherland was back over the try line for Lowestoft to take a two point lead but again Walden had an answer: Nick Baker touching down under the posts.

However, with eight minutes left Lowestoft scored the decisive points, Beales racing into the corner to restore the two point lead. Walden marched into Lowestoft territory but a blocked drop goal turned the ball over and Russ Chapman kicked the ball into touch.
