Coach John McLaughlin said: “The young players enjoyed the day and it was great to meet the first-team players and experience the big-match atmosphere.

“We were made to feel very welcome by everyone at Catons Lane and would realy recommend it to others.”

The majority of the club’s 40 teams had their first games of the season, with the under-14s playing their first match in the Eastern Junior Alliance.

The Mini Soccer School saw 60 children, aged four to six, in action at their new Bridge End Gardens base and chairman Martin Johnson said: “After all the hard graft over the summer it’s fantastic to get football going again.

“We are looking forward to another great season and looking to grow the club even more and improve what we can offer all teams.”
