Tom Blomqvist enjoyed a fantastic weekend of racing at the Nurburgring as he took two podiums and a top five finish in the latest round of the FIAEuropeanFormula 3 championship.
Having qualified eighth, Blomqvist dropped to 11th while running on slick tyres in the wet before pushing back up for a top five finish, with team mate Antonio Giovinazzi finishing on the podium in third.
When qualifying finally for races two and three finally got the green flag after barrier repairs, Blomqvist managed to take pole position for both.
Starting from the front of the grid, Blomqvist dropped two placed and had to fend off Esteban Ocon to keep third.
By lap 20, lead driver Max Verstappen, who this week signed an F1 contract with Torro Rosso, began to slow and eventually stopped which gave Giovinazzi the win with Blomqvist behind in second for a strong team result.
Blomqvist said: “On one hand, I am happy with second place, because it brings many points. On the other hand, it is also disappointing, because I started from pole position and, of course, I wanted to win. The problem was my start, which wasn’t good.”
For the final race of the weekend, Blomqvist was again in pole position for the start but he was hit by Felix Rosenqvist at the apex on turn one.
Blomqvist was lucky to escape but he had Lucas Auer on his tail from the beginning of the restart and he eventually surrendered the lead at turn four.
A few laps later Blomqvist battled for the lead, but ran deep, allowing Auer to remain in front. This is how the final race ended, Auer took first and Blomqvist took to the podium in second.
The next round of the FIA European F3 Championship takes place in Italy at the Imola race track.
