Saffron Screen will celebrate its eighth birthday by screening Irish drama Run & Jump on its opening weekend as a mark of support for outstanding independent cinema.

The event is a first for the not-for-profit cinema, which usually schedules films a little later than its multiplex counterparts as it is not a full time venue. However, the cinema continues to grow in popularity and has worked with the film’s distributor to show the independent film on its opening weekend.

Run & Jump stars Maxine Peake (Shameless, Silk, The Village) as dynamo wife and mother Vanetia, who is rebuilding the life she loved after her 38-year-old husband suffers a personality changing stroke. Entering the emotional fray is buttoned-up American researcher Ted Fielding (Will Forte, best known for Saturday Night Live and the recent film Nebraska) who is staying with the family for two months.

Uplifting and authentic, Run & Jump is an unconventional love story and an intimate family portrait, observing how we risk ourselves for love, in all its forms.

Saffron Screen, who also recently showed its support for independent Brit flick Svengali with a special event including a Q&A with the film’s star Vicky McClure, strives to give its audience something extra and shows a wide selection of films, including independent and foreign language films, blockbusters, animations and documentaries which it hopes will appeal to the whole community

Saffron Screen’s business manager Rebecca del Tufo said: “As a local independent cinema we feel it’s important to support independent films, particularly very good ones like Run & Jump, which are often not given much screen time at the multiplexes. We are thrilled to be showing such a fabulous film in its opening weekend and we hope our audiences will enjoy it”.

Jonathan Miller, a recent arrival in Saffron Walden and a volunteer at Saffron Screen, said: “I love Run and Jump. It’s full of heart and vitality with superb performances, especially from Maxine Peake. I’ve worked in Ireland a lot and, to me, this film captures absolutely the rough and tumble of Irish family life.

“I’m delighted that Saffron Screen is showing it as soon as it comes out. It’s a film that many people will love but there’s no guarantee the multiplexes will even notice it! It’s a little gem.”

Run & Jump will be shown at Saffron Screen on Saturday, May 24 and Sunday, May 25, 8pm. Tickets are available from saffronscreen.com, the Tourist Information Centre and box office.
