The historic map of Saffron Walden, which was discovered last year

A HISTORIC map of Saffron Walden, dating back to 1757, will be on display for one day in a special event.

Local people are invited to come and view the map, the oldest one of the town on record, along with several other small displays.

There will also be a series of short talks on the historic map including one on how it has been conserved at the Essex Record Office (ERO).

Experts will also be on hand to answer questions.

The streets and drawings are all clear on the map, despite suffering a great deal of damage.

It was made by Edward John Eyre and it is believed both maps were commissioned by Elizabeth Countess of Portsmouth or her nephew, Sir John Griffin, who inherited part of the nearby estate of Audley End.

Since the map arrived at the ERO, expert conservators have worked to stabilise the map to prevent any further deterioration, and have made any repairs possible.

The map was discovered in spring 2012 in a farm outbuilding in Wendons Ambo.

County Councillor Jeremy Lucas, Cabinet Member for Customer Services, Environment and Culture said: “What a discovery for the residents and historians of Saffron Walden this map has been.

The map will be on display at Saffron Walden Town Hall on Saturday, March 16.
