English Heritage is hosting a series of family events at the historic property that will appeal to children and adults alike.

The Time Travellers Go... events throughout August give kids the opportunity to take a unique journey through history and are a great way for kids to meet new friends, discover how fun learning can be, and to explore history in a fun, creative way.

Full event details are below:

Time Travellers Go… World War Two

Wed Aug 4 - Sun Aug 8, 10am - 5pm

Step back into the 1940s and discover what life was like during World War II. Learn about aircraft identification, secret codes and signalling systems; take part in an obstacle course and drill, get top tips on how to be the ultimate soldier and make your own gas mask to take home.

Cavaliers & Roundheads

Wed Aug 11 - Sun Aug 15, 10am - 5pm

Join our Time Travellers as we take a step back in time to the English Civil War. Take part in a pike drill and obstacle course as you train to join Cromwell’s Army!


Wed Aug 18 - Sun Aug 22, 10am – 5pm

Discover what life would have been like on the open seas during the 1800s. Sail your own ship in a mock sea battle, try your hand a knot tying and make your very own navigation device to take home.

Horsing Around

Wed Aug 25 - Sat Aug 28, 10am - 5pm

Another chance to take part in our exciting new Time Traveller event this August. Compete in a hobby horse gymkhana and cavalry drill, design your own horse brass and learn about the importance of horses through history.

WWII: The Home Front

Sun Aug 29 & Mon Aug 30, 10am - 5pm (bank holiday)

Step back in time this Bank Holiday weekend and immerse yourself in 1940s life as we commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Home Guard. Witness impressive firepower displays, training exercises and authentic living history encampments, learn about the ration book cookery from Martha’s War or just soak up the atmosphere in the beautiful grounds at Audley End whilst listening to some 1940s music. Plus, the kids can get involved as they are put through their paces in our fun obstacle course and training school.


All children are welcome to join in the Time Travellers Go… events. An additional £1 will be charged on standard admission for every child, member and non member. Ticket prices will be available to purchase at the event site on the day. Ticket price includes entry to event plus the castle and grounds.
