Uttlesforde Orchestra will be giving its first concert in Saffron Hall next month – and central to the programme is gifted young local pianist George Harliono.

The Saffron Walden youngster, who is a music scholar at The Perse Upper School in Cambridge and The Royal Academy in London, will perform Liszt’s virtuosic but light-hearted Piano Concerto No.1 at the world-class venue on Saturday, February 8.

It has been a busy year for George, who has dreams of becoming a concert pianist.

As well as beginning to study at The Royal Academy of Music he has also given performances at Wigmore Hall in London, West Road Concert Hall in Cambridge and venues throughout Europe.

In April he travelled to Cyprus to compete in the prestigious Evangelia Tjiarri Piano Competition.

Competing against pianists up to 19 years of age, he won the competition’s grand prize.

In May he took part in the Jeunesses International Piano Competition in Bucharest, where, although he was the youngest competitor in the group (14 years and under) he won first prize and appeared on national television.

Then, in November, he was selected from over 400 young pianists worldwide to work and perform with the acclaimed artist Lang Lang in Munich, where as well as performing at a concert with the maestro, he travelled to local schools to talk to students about what it is like to perform and compete at an international level.

One of the concerts he is most proud of was also in November when he performed, along with his younger sister Adelaide, at Madingley Hall in Cambridge to raise money for the charity Cam Sight.

This will be the first time he has performed at Saffron Hall and the youngster says he is “really looking forward to it”.

Framing his performance are two highlights of the symphonic repertoire: Stravinsky’s Symphony in C from 1940 (one of his most tuneful scores) and Brahms’ energetic and thrilling Symphony No.2.

Tickets for the concert range from £3-£10, available from Saffron Walden Tourist Information Centre, online at saffronhall.com or by calling 0845 548 7650. For more details about Uttlesforde Orchestra, visit the website at Uttlesforde.net.
