A little-known operetta by the great German composer Johann Sebastian Bach will be performed when the Manuden Singers present their annual Village Glyndebourne picnic concert in aid of St Clare Hospice.

Otherwise famous for his serious church works, such as Messiah, Bach’s Peasant Cantata shows the 17th century Baroque musician in uncharacteristically frivolous mood, telling the story of a local squire who actually treats his villagers well.

The piece is part of a light-hearted programme of summertime music, which also includes close harmony as well as well-known songs from Irving Berlin’s America, such as Blue Skies and Putting on the Ritz.

Young jazz duo The Standards, vocalist Emily Yarrow and pianist James Priest, will also be performing during the concert in the grounds of Wilford House in The Street, Manuden, on Sunday, July 20.

Concert-goers are invited to bring their own picnics and chairs and enter into the Glyndebourne spirit by coming appropriately dressed for the occasion. From tuxedos to casualwear – anything goes! There will be a suitably long interval for picnics and socialising.

The open air musical event is the Manuden Singers’ 14th annual Glyndebourne and, as with all their concerts, the aim is to raise funds for local charities while also enjoying good music. Over the years, the Singers have raised more than £30,000 for good causes.

Gates open at 6pm and the music starts at 6.30pm. In the event of rain, the concert will take place in St Mary’s Church, Manuden.

Tickets are £10 (£5 children), from the St Clare Hospice shop in Devoils Lane, Bishop’s Stortford, St Clare community fundraiser Sarah Calder on 07528 520016 or 01279 812157.
