World-renowned concert pianist John Lill is just one of the top ranking musicians who will be performing in the first season at Saffron Walden’s new venue, Saffron Hall.
The hall will open officially on Saturday November 30 with a celebratory concert given by Cambridge-based Britten Sinfonia, and will include a new fanfare commissioned from the Master of the Queen’s Music, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies.
Britten Sinfonia will feature in a further four additional concerts during the season, alongside world-renowned soloists.
An Open House on Sunday December 1 will give members of the public their first opportunity to take a tour of the new venue and enjoy a day of free concerts, workshops and displays from local groups.
Two Saffron Walden County High School productions also feature in Saffron Hall’s long weekend of celebratory opening events; the Michaelmas Concert on Thursday November 28 and An Evening of Shakespeare on Friday November 29.
Saffron Hall’s newly-released 201-14 programme features a range of household names in the musical, theatrical and literary world, including violinist Tasmin Little, actress Patricia Routledge and leading ensembles the Brodsky Quartet and the Hilliard Ensemble.
Local groups will also be putting the venue through its paces throughout 2014. Saffron Walden Choral Society and Uttlesforde Orchestra will each make two appearances.
In April 2014, theatre group HyperFusion Academy will present a brand new musical with original songs from Walden jazz pianist and singer Joanna Eden. Chamber choir Granta Chorale, directed by Janet Wheeler, will make their debut in the Hall on Saturday May 10 with Frank Martin’s Mass for Double Choir.
The hall has also joined forces with the town’s literary festival Words in Walden, now in its seventh year, to bring guest speakers to including resident, writer and broadcaster Germaine Greer, and the former poet laureate Andrew Motion.
The closing concert of the new season is a recital by 21-year-old, Essex-born Benjamin Grosvenor, who won the keyboard final of BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2004 and opened the BBC Proms in 2011.
More concerts and events will be announced throughout the season.
