This February half-term Audley End House and Gardens invites families to come and experience ‘Everything But the Squeak Week’ as resident cook, Avis Crocombe, demonstrates how a country house made the most of even the most unusual cuts of pork in the 1880s.

This crackling good event (February 17-21, 11am-4pm) will take visitors on a journey back in time to the late 19th century with the sights, sounds and smells of a Victorian kitchen during a very different cooking experience, as Mrs Crocombe gets to work on an entire pig and cooks her way through everything from the trotters to the snout.

In Victorian times no part of the pig went to waste. At Audley End authentic Victorian recipes will be used to re-create historical dishes that would have regularly been served in aristocratic households, demonstrating how even the most unattractive food can be transformed into something delicious.

Lucy Hutchings, head of events for English Heritage, said: “This is a great event for all the family and Audley End is the perfect place to hold it with its fully functioning kitchen and service wing helping to bring the event to life.

“Visitors can learn a range of unusual recipes and get a real feel for what life was like in Victorian times when even the wealthiest households left no part of the pig to waste.”

It may be cold outside but this event is bound to be roasting!

Prices: Non-member: Adults £13.40 / concessions £12.10 / children £8 / family ticket £34.80. English Heritage members: Free

Ticket price includes entry to event, plus entry to the service wing and grounds.
