A big gap in local walking guides at Saffron Walden Tourist Information Centre has now been remedied with the publication of History Walks in Walden by Jacqueline Cooper.

The book not only describes some of the best walks in and around the town and countryside, but is also packed with history and wildlife notes that help to bring the walks to life.

All four town walks begin right outside the TIC, beside the ornamental fountain, and follow the town streets in different directions before going into the countryside. There are also three entirely rural walks based on the three hamlets of Audley End Village, Little Walden and Sewards End.

With the help of extensive history notes, this provides a guide to how the town evolved over time and the many stories associated with different places.

Mark Starte, TIC duty manager, said: “Walks books are always big sellers at the TIC and Jacky’s new book has already proved very popular.

“It is an updated version of her previous book Discover Walden which has been a top seller with us for many years.”

The book has 180 pages and over 150 photos, some in colour and historic maps, and will be an essential companion for exploring the most beautiful town in Essex and its outstanding landscape. Its structure – which separates the route directions from the descriptions – enables readers to be ‘armchair travellers’ if they prefer, enjoying the walks even when it is raining outside!

A series of local walks will be organised this year by Peter Cooper, author of The Uttlesford Way guide and will include several round Saffron Walden. The author will be signing books in the town at a date to be confirmed in February.
