It’s the sixties - the 1660s. Nell Gwynn is on the stage and Charles II is in the audience.

Jessica Swale’s Olivier Award winning comedy will be at Cambridge Arts Theatre from March 21-25.

Hearing Nell Gwynn heckle at the playhouse, theatre manager, Charles Hart decides to train her as an actress, just before the first women are allowed on the London stage.

When Charles II grants permission for women to act, Nell joins Hart in the King’s Company. This is approved by everyone except Edward Kynaston, who had played the company’s female parts. After the king sees Nell on stage he starts an affair with her. Nell is then forced to choose between the stage and her royal lover.

The play won Best New Comedy in the 2016 Olivier Awardss. Presented by English Touring Theatre and starring Olivier-Award nominated actress Laura Pitt-Pulford, this is its first UK tour after runs in the West End and at The Globe.

7.45pm, matinees 2.30pm, Thursday and Saturday. Tickets, 01223 503333 or www.cambridgeartstheatre.com.
